Malakai

Emerging from Vancouver Island, Malakai is a genre-blending folk artist who delivers a musical experience far beyond his years. His haunting vocals, intricate guitar work, and heartfelt songwriting create an experience that lingers long after the final note. At 17-years-old, he has already spent a decade honing his craft.  
 
Celebrated for his use of alternate tunings and unique chord progressions, Malakai's distinct instrumentation sculpts emotion and atmosphere. His music is “introspective yet inclusive, he can pull you into areas of thought you might not have ventured; marvelous arrangements.” (Duncan Showroom) Malakai’s songwriting weaves heartfelt melancholy with warmth and unexpected beauty. Onstage, his natural charisma and engaging banter offer a striking contrast to the emotional depth of his music, making his live performances feel personal, spontaneous, and memorable. 
 
As a solo artist, Malakai has quickly built momentum, earning spots at major festivals across Vancouver Island. His festival credits include but are not limited to, the historic Filberg Festival, alongside Steph Strings and Alex Cuba, and the Islands Folk Festival, joining a billing featuring Boy Golden and Stephen Fearing. In addition to notable performances at the Port Theatre and the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre, Malakai is a regular crowd favorite at the celebrated 39 Days of July music festival where he was a Musician in Residence. Malakai has opened for many acclaimed artists including Lynn Miles, Valdy, and Daniel Champagne.  

A formative part of his musical journey has been the Duncan Showroom, where venue proprietor Longevity John has championed his development. Reflecting on Malakai's artistry, Longevity John observes, “Malakai never sings a song the same way twice, he has emotion.” That spontaneity and emotional authenticity lie at the heart of Malakai's approach to music: an instinctive connection to song that has been part of his identity for as long as he can remember.  
 
Following a trip to Montréal, where he performed in four private showcases at the 2025 Folk Alliance International Conference, Malakai released his debut EP, “Malakai: Live at the Duncan Showroom.” With his latest single, “Beautiful,” now streaming, he continues to expand his creative horizons, writing and producing music for himself and other artists.
