Malakai

Malakai is an emerging genre-blending folk artist from Vancouver Island. Performing since the age of 7, at 17-years-old he is already a seasoned musician. Accompanying himself on guitar and piano, Malakai sings with a soul surprising in one so young.

  Celebrated for his use of alternate tunings and unique chord progressions, Malakai's distinct instrumentation sculpts emotion and atmosphere. His music is “introspective yet inclusive, he can pull you into areas of thought you might not have ventured; marvelous arrangements.” (Duncan Showroom)  Malakai’s songwriting weaves heartfelt melancholy with warmth and honesty. Onstage, his natural charisma and engaging banter offer a striking contrast to the emotional depth of his music, making his live performances very memorable.

  As a solo artist, Malakai has been a feature performer in both the Discovery Series at The Port Theatre in Nanaimo and The Cabaret Series at The Cowichan Performing Arts Center. In addition to performing at venues and festivals such as Filberg Festival, Nanaimo Blues Festival, and Islands Folk Festival, to list a few, Malakai is a regular crowd favorite at the 39 Days of July music festival where he was a Musician in Residence. Malakai has opened for many acclaimed artists including Lynn Miles, Valdy and Daniel Champagne. 

  Honing his skills at his home venue, The Duncan Showroom, proprietor Longevity John has been a foundation of support, "Malakai never sings a song the same way twice, he has emotion." From the time he could talk, Malakai’s relationship with music has been intrinsic to his identity and the source of his ambition. 

After returning from Montreal where he performed in four Private Showcases at The 2025 Folk Alliance International Conference, Malakai released his first EP, Malakai - Live at the Duncan Showroom. With his new single "Beautiful" now on streaming, Malakai is currently writing and producing for himself and others.
